Description:
This International Course ECMO Transport is developed between International Faculty from EuroELSO and ESPNIC Societies in collaboration with ECMO Centre in University Hospital Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome, Italy and Giovan Battista Pastine Rome Ciampino Airport. The course is designed to provide immersive, hands-on training in neonatal and pediatric ECMO transport. Developed by a global faculty of experts from EuroELSO and ESPNIC, the program combines didactic sessions, high-fidelity simulations, and practical workshops to equip participants with the latest knowledge and skills in ECLS transport.
Facilitators:
A multidisciplinary team of international experts from EuroELSO/ESPNIC and local faculty.
Participants:
Limited to 24 international participants to ensure high-quality, interactive learning.
Target audience:
Intensivists, anaesthetists, perfusionists, paediatricians, neonatologists, Emergency Department physicians, cardiac intensivists, ECMO specialists, surgeons, cardiologists, ICU nurses, theatre staff, trainees and other allied health care professionals looking after patients on ECMO.
Course Goals:
- Acquire advanced knowledge and competencies in managing patients on ECMO transport.
- Develop multidisciplinary teamwork skills essential for safe and effective ECMO transport.
Course Format – a blend of:
- Didactic sessions
- Hands-on workshops
- High-fidelity simulations using advanced mannequins and educational models
- Multilevel clinical scenarios guided by experienced international facilitators
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand various transport modes and their challenges in ECMO transports
- Explore altitude physics and aeromedicine principles.
- Identify risks and working conditions during transport.
- Master logistical aspects: preparation, planning, and communication.
- Familiarize with dedicated ECMO transport equipment.
- Troubleshoot complications through high-fidelity simulation scenarios.
- Gain insight into legal and insurance considerations for international transport.
Experienced in the two transport modes offered during course: Road and Air.
Educational lectures and discussions will be led by speakers representing ESPNIC, EuroELSO and ECMO Centre in Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome, Italy.

VENUE and ACCOMMODATION
The course fee of EUR 1.500*/participant includes the attendance to comprehensive course programme, accommodation and full-board for two nights.
Day 1 Wednesday 16th September starts at ~ 13:00 and ends with a course dinner at the hotel. The first afternoon will be filled with lectures, among others: History of ECMO transports, altitude physics and aeromedicine, types of ECMO transports, primary transport-cannulation techiques, ECLS transport concepts, ethical challenges and crew resource management.
Day 2 Thursday 17th September and Day 3 Friday 18th September finish at ~ 17:00 are whole days with simulation practices in two groups of 6 alternated with lectures for 12 participants. Simulations will be conducted by international experts and simulation staff from different EuroELSO ECMO Centres and the ECMO Centre in in Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome, Italy.
Experienced in the two transport modes offered during course: Road and Air.
Educational lectures and discussions will be led by speakers representing ESPNIC and EuroELSO.
